Basing Your Miniatures

In this section, we will show you different ways to create stunning bases for your miniatures.

Tools for basing:

  • 3D bases
  • texture paint
  • texture spreader
  • tufts, synthetic grass, rocks
  • PVA glue

3D Bases

Most models come with a flat base. An easy trick is to replace these bland bases with 3D bases that have texture, objects, or scenery on them. Highly recommended if you want your heroes to stand out!

Texture Paint

Texture paint is a type of technical paint that has the look and feel of mud, sand, or even snow once dry. This type of paint from Citadel is often thick as toothpaste and needs to be applied using a texture spreader (don't dare using a good brush).

Wait for the texture paint to be fully dry before applying shade or drybrushing. Below are some of the Texture Paints available. Check the full list here.

Grass, Rocks & Tufts

The classic way to decorate bases (long before paint scientists developed texture paint) is to use sand, synthetic grass, rocks, and tufts.

Use your imagination and select an environment for your model like a scorching desert, a putrid swamp, or a rocky mountain then stick the various ingredients to your base using PVA glue for sand and grass and super glue for heavy material like rocks. Below are some of the basing materials available. Check the full list here.
